The San Francisco 49ers just can't catch a break. This time, it is quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo that has been bitten by the injury bug.

Garoppolo left their Week 8 game against the Seattle Seahawks in the second half after hurting his ankle once again.

There's a bigger problem there though. Not only did Nick Mullens warm up, but he actually entered the game. Adam Schefter of ESPN took to Twitter to announce that Garoppolo was officially taken out of the game.

Now, this is a weird situation. Jimmy Garoppolo was taken out due to injury, but he was also not effective at all.

The quarterback had just 84 yards and no touchdowns on 11-for-16 passing for the 49ers in the game. He also had an interception and a fumble, so taking the quarterback in a blowout probably was not a crazy idea.

Meanwhile his replacement, Nick Mullens, absolutely dominated. The Seahawks still managed to win the game by 10 points, but Mullens has certainly made a case for himself going forward.

The quarterback went 18-for-25 for 235 yards and two touchdowns, compared to no interceptions.

San Francisco's offense looked completely lost for most of the game. However, they seemed to put it all together when Mullens entered.

The argument here though, is that this has happened for both 49ers quarterbacks. Garoppolo has led the offense with some great games, but he struggles quite often as well.

Meanwhile, Mullens has had some ups and downs in his career at the same time. That has included some contests where he led the 49ers' offense well and others where he can't seem to find any type of rhythm.

However, one still has to wonder about this a little bit. Garoppolo has had multiple bad games this year, so dropping a “stinker” like that against a division rivals has to sting.

Could a terrible game and a re-aggravation of an ankle injury lead to Garoppolo getting benched for Mullens–at least for a little bit to see if he can be the answer for San Francisco?

It's hard to see the 49ers moving on from Garoppolo with someone else on their roster right now, but it's definitely something to look out for.
