In their preseason finale, the San Francisco 49ers showed off a rotating, two-quarterback system between Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance for much of the first half.
Playing against the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers was shuffling Garoppolo and Lance in and out of the lineup non-stop during drives in the first half. As chaotic as it sounds, it actually worked fairly well for San Francisco.
Following the game, via 49erswebzone.com, Shanahan spoke on the options for the 49ers at quarterback entering the regular season.
“I just wanted them to get live action of it,” Shanahan said. “We've done it in practice a couple times, and this was the last time before we're going to get into the regular season. It's the last time you can have the opportunity to do it, so I kind of wanted to do it in this game.”
“We’ve got two guys who can play and we’ve been doing it in practice a little bit, wanted to do it out there in the game, and it’s always going to be an option.”
Trey Lance, the 49ers rookie quarterback, seemed to vibe with the idea when asked about how it went.
“It's fun. I trust Coach Shanahan, and I know Jimmy does, and our whole team and locker room does,” Lance said. “He's going to find ways to get the guys that need the ball the ball and do whatever it takes to win games. So yeah, it was a ton of fun for sure.”
Shanahan still hasn't named an official Week 1 starter yet for the 49ers although the impression is that it will be Garoppolo with Lance potentially getting sprinkled into the mix.
