The San Francisco 49ers have added a new piece to their offensive line. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team has given up a future draft pick to acquire offensive tackle Shon Coleman from the Cleveland Browns.
Coleman started each game for the Browns last season as their right offensive tackle, but Cleveland didn’t see much reason to continue plugging the former Auburn Tiger into the team’s quarterback protection unit. After all, Coleman was among the worst performers in his position last year, with Pro Football Focus giving him a below average grade.
Coleman held the No. 1 spot in the left tackle position for the Browns at some point this offseason, but the team eventually decided to hand the job to Joel Bitonio earlier this month, per Mark Inabinett of AL.com. As it turned out, it was a sign that Shon Coleman will not be with the team for long.
In addition to that, the Browns also played Coleman in the preseason mostly alongside third-stringers, which tells a lot about how far the player has slid down in terms of importance.
Now with the 49ers, Coleman is expected to provide support behind starting left tackle Joe Staley, the anchor of San Francisco’s offensive line that is looking to do a better job securing their quarterback in the pocket.
Last season, the 49ers allowed 43 sacks, 116 QB hits, and ranked just 18th with a 6.8 percent adjusted sack rate, according to Football Outsiders.
Coleman has two more years left on his current contract, which will pay him, $874, 884 in 2018 and $972,164 in 2019.
