The New York Giants played their first football game in 1925, and throughout their history they have had some elite teams. Some of the greatest teams were early in their history, and others were in the last decade.

Let's take a look at the five greatest Giants teams in franchise history.

5. 1927

Football looked a little different back in 1927, but there is no doubt there was something special about this squad. In just their third season of existence, the Giants won their first title. There were no playoffs back in 1927, which meant they were crowned the champions after finishing the season with an 11-1-1 record.

The Giants shut out 10 of the 13 opponents in that season and outscored their opponents 197-20 throughout the season. The second best team in that season were the Green Bay Packers who finished with 7-2-1 record.

When people think of New York and all the special teams in their history, the 1927 team was often overlooked.

4. 1956

The 1956 Giants coaching staff was loaded. Jim Lee Howell was the head coach, but the real big names were the coordinators. Vince Lombardi served as the offensive coordinator and Tom Landry served as the defensive coordinator. On the field, the Giants also had all kinds of stars. Linebacker Sam Huff was named Rookie of the Year, in what was the start of a great career. Frank Gifford was the first player in history to be in the top five of rushing yards and receptions. He was named the NFL MVP and the Giants probably wouldn't have had a whole lot of success without him.

The Giants finished with an 8-3-1 record during the regular season. In the NFL Championship Game, the Giants knocked off the Chicago Bears 47-7.

3. 1990

The 1990 season for the Giants was special, especially considering what they had to go through. The regular season had few hiccups finishing with a 13-3 record. The only real big hiccup is when Phil Simms went down with injury, leaving Jeff Hostetler to fill the void. The season looked to be dead, but Hostetler had different ideas. After dominating the Bears in the first round, the Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills by a combined three points total.

In the Super Bowl against the Bills, they used ball control to keep the ball away from the Bills' offense, and that was enough to win the title.

2. 2007

The 2007 season for the Giants was so special because of what they ruined. The NFC East was brutal in 2007, which caused the Giants to finish the regular season with a 10-6 record. Entering the playoffs, the Giants were the fifth seed, and the road to the Super Bowl wasn't easy. The playoffs started with wins over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys. In the NFC Championship Game, it took until overtime to come away with a victory over the Green Bay Packers.

In the Super Bowl, the Giants faced the Patriots, who were one win away from the second perfect season in NFL history. Eli Manning and David Tyree cooked up magic when the wide receiver came down with one of the greatest catches in NFL history. Manning later connected with Plaxico Burress on the same drive to win a historic victory and title.

1. 1986

The 1986 season team had Lawrence Taylor, who was a tremendous part of the team's regular season 14-2 record. In the playoffs, they dominated the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins. In the Super Bowl, they struggled in the first half against the Denver Broncos. In the second half they did a complete 360, leading to a 39-20 victory, and their first championship since 1956.

After the victory a Gatorade bath was splashed on head coach Bill Parcells, the start of a tradition that still lives on today across a lot of different sports. In all Parcells was given 17 different Gatorade baths.
