The Virginia Tech Hokies seemed finished in the pursuit of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament one week ago. They lost at Clemson on Saturday, March 5. They were way down the seed list, easily among 10 to 12 teams not in the field of 68. Virginia Tech entered this week needing to shake up the ACC championship odds and make a run to the final. Merely beating Notre Dame in the quarterfinals wasn’t going to be enough. Beating North Carolina in the semifinals on Friday, a much more impressive statement to college basketball odds experts, gave the Hokies a far more substantial portfolio.
