After losing Nick Saban this offseason, the transfer portal was overall not a friend for the Alabama football team. They had to deal with a lot of departures, but they did also bring in some exciting talent. One new addition to watch is Texas A&M transfer LT Overton. Overton is a defensive lineman and he racked up 48 tackles and one sack in two years with the Aggies. He should be a valuable player for the Crimson Tide, but he hasn't been at camp the past two days.

The calendar now reads August, and the college football season will get going three weeks from Saturday. Alabama football will kick things off on August 31st. Camp is now underway, and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack gave an update as to why LT Overton has been absent.

Not feeling well right now, but I think he'll be back in a day or two,” Kane Wommack said, according to an article from Rivals.

Overton spent two years with Texas A&M before transferring to Alabama. In 2022, he finished the season with 31 total tackles and one sack. Last year, his totals went down a bit as he finished with 17 total tackles and zero sacks. He is expected to compete for a starting spot during camp.

The Alabama football defense wants to create turnovers

One thing that Kane Wommack wants his Alabama football defense to do this year is pressure the quarterback and create turnovers. Wommack mentioned that LT Overton can naturally make that happen.

“We are very focused on creating takeaways here and you create takeaways by creating pressure on the quarterback,” Wommack said. “We looked at all 751 takeaways in the NFL last season and out of those, the vast majority of them come from pressure on the quarterback, got hands on the quarterback or they were able to put him in an uncomfortable position to where he forced the throw. For us, I think we have some guys naturally that can do that off the edge. To me, Jah-Marien Latham, LT Overton — I think I've seen a lot out of our Wolf room right now. I think Keanu Khot, Qua Russaw, [Quandarrius] Robinson are doing some great things.”

Alabama had one of the best defenses in college football last season, and they are hoping that will continue into the 2024 season. They did lose some of their best players to the NFL, but they have a couple good transfer portal additions coming in. Overton is certainly one of them.
