The Chicago Bears were left with a notable void in the backfield after trading Jordan Howard this offseason. Fortunately, Chicago is confident that rookie running back David Montgomery is poised to serve as a viable replacement.

Montgomery has been turning heads through training camp and the preseason. According to Terez a. Paylor of Yahoo Sports, the Bears have big plans for him in the 2019 NFL season.

Offensively, the Bears are in love with RB David Montgomery, who brings a professional approach that is rare for a rookie. He’s a no-nonsense guy who takes football very seriously. The Bears love that, plus his receiving skills & make-you-miss. He will help this team immediately.

The update certainly comes as no surprise. Montgomery showed plenty of promise in the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Matt Nagy even opted to sit him out of their Week 2 matchup against the New York Giants in an effort to keep him healthy for the start of the regular season.

Nagy's high praise indicates that the rookie will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact on this Bears' offense. While he has displayed plenty of versatility, it is safe to assume he could take on the role Howard had during his time with Chicago.

Montgomery is much more suited for the early-down work than pint-sized running back Tarik Cohen is. Meanwhile, Cohen's prowess as a receiver will allow Chicago to potentially keep that same 1-2 punch out of the backfield. It will be interesting to see how the touches are split once the regular season begins.
