The Colorado Rockies will head to the “City of Stars” to battle it out with the Los Angeles Dodgers in an NL West clash on the diamond. Join us for our MLB odds series where our Rockies-Dodgers prediction and pick will be made.
After a horrid 8-28 start to begin the 2024 season, the Rockies have gone 11-6 since which serves as the second-best record over that span in all of the majors. Indeed, this has been a shock to say the least, and despite the recent success, Colorado still sports a 20-35 and currently sits in dead-last place within the NL West. Entering this series, the Rox are already a whopping 14.5 games back of the Dodgers for the division lead. Regardless, Colorado will call upon starting pitcher Cal Quantrill who has amassed a 4-3 record to go with a 3.53 ERA.
Meanwhile, the dominant Dodgers continue to be exactly that. Even more so, they will be given a hefty advantage to take care of business with pitching phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto scheduled to take the rubber. Thus far, Yamamoto is 5-2 with a 3.51 ERA in eleven starts. Overall, the Dodgers have won three straight games and boast a 6.5-game lead over the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres for the top spot in the NL West.

Why the Rockies will cover the spread/win
What is happening in Colorado? In the blink of an eye, the Rockies have stepped up their game. With that being said, Colorado is still well behind pace in terms of playoff contention, but things are definitely looking up.
Coming into 2024, there were massive question marks for the Rockies offense, but they have proven that they can string together some stellar play of late. In fact, the Rockies have scored at least seven runs in three consecutive ball games. Altogether, Colorado's hitting metrics still leave much to be desired with the 19th-most runs in baseball, but they do possess the ninth-best batting average in the Bigs at .248. All in all, don't sleep on this scalding-hot Rockies offense.
Over the years, Cal Quantrill has put together some strong seasons most notably in 2022 when he compiled a 15-5 record and a shiny 3.38 ERA during his tenure as a Cleveland Guardian. Fast forward a couple of seasons, and Quantrill has put together a solid start in his first season as a member of the Rockies. Regardless, going up against the sheer talent of the Dodgers is a different beast, and Quantrill will have to roll with the punches as they come.
Why the Dodgers will cover the spread/win
On paper, it makes sense why the NL West-leading Dodgers are the favorites over the cellar-dweller Rockies, but anything can happen in the magical sport of baseball.
Shortly after the Dodgers found themselves in the midst of a five-game losing streak, it was LA that responded nicely with a sweep of the New York Mets. Surely, it wasn't expected that Los Angeles' scuffles weren't going to last long, and that is exactly what happened.
In order to give the Dodgers home fans something to cheer about against a lesser opponent, LA will need to come out firing from the pitching mound, and what better than relying on Yamamoto to record a masterful outing? Surprisingly enough, the Japanese sensation has allowed ten runs in his last three outings combined. Simply put, he could be more than due to put his struggles behind him with a solid Saturday showing.
If all else fails with Yamamoto, at least the Dodgers have a powerful offense they can fall back on. With the top slugging percentage and the second-most runs scored in all of baseball, there is a reason why the Dodgers are as feared as they come. Fresh off of rocking the Mets for ten runs on a gargantuan 16 hits. Between the four-headed monster of Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith, the possibility of this Los Angeles offense exploding again in the runs department is quite high.
Final Rockies-Dodgers prediction & pick
It was the Dodgers that finally were able to get back on track against the Mets, but the Rockies have been playing some solid, fundamentally sound baseball of late. While it might not be a popular pick, side with Colorado keep it close leading to a covering of the spread as underdogs.
