The 2023 Major League Baseball season involved a number of startling plot twists in the National League West. One was that the San Diego Padres did not make the playoffs. The Padres had a lot of big-name players on a roster with a very high cumulative salary. Yet, San Diego finished below the Arizona Diamondbacks, who had a much cheaper roster but were able to make the National League Wild Card Series, win it, and then catch fire in the National League postseason, going all the way to the World Series. Neither San Diego nor Arizona has been consistently strong so far this season. Through 43 games, the Padres are just 22-21. That's the bad news for the Padres. However, the good news for the Friars is that they're second in the N.L. West because Arizona and the San Francisco Giants are worse. San Diego has been fortunate that a lot of other National League teams have struggled, but the Padres know they need to be better if they want to grab a playoff spot. On one hand, the Padres do have a decent chance at the third and final National League wild card spot. On the other hand, the Padres are already several games behind the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs in the battle for the first two N.L. wild card berths. (The Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers lead the Braves and Cubs, respectively, in the N.L. East and Central Division races.) If the five teams ahead of the Padres remain steady in the coming weeks, the Padres might enter the summer realizing that if they don't get the sixth seed in the National League playoffs, they won't get a berth at all. The Padres need to improve so that they might be able to get the first or second wild card spot and don't have to be in a position where it's “No. 6 seed or bust.”

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread
The logic behind picking the Rockies in this game boils down to this: Colorado is actually playing well and pitching well. It's true. For the first time all season, the Rockies have swept a series. For the first time this season, Colorado has won four straight games. For the first time all season, the Rockies have looked like a good team. They're not a good team — they're 12-28 — but the past four games have been excellent for the Rox. They have gotten terrific pitching from their starters and bullpen. Their sweep of the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers was a dominant display. Colorado allowed just six runs and three extra-base hits to the powerful Rangers in three games. The Rangers mustered one extra-base hit in the final 21 innings of that weekend series. Texas did not score more than three runs in any of the games in the series. Colorado won all three games by at least two runs. After playing that well, the Rockies might be turning the corner. At the very least, they need to be taken more seriously.
Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread
The Rockies' sweep of the Rangers feels like an outlier more than an indicator. Colorado is going to come back down to earth. The Padres just won two of three against the Los Angeles Dodgers and are 5-3 against the Dodgers this season. Having a winning record in eight games versus the Dodgers is more of an indicator than the Rockies having one good weekend versus the Rangers.

The Padres are a lot better than the Rockies, and Colorado's pitching will not last. Take San Diego.
