The Buffalo Bills came oh-so-close to glory last season. Behind Josh Allen's heroics, they almost knocked out the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round. However, their tired legs and shoddy defense cost them a shot at the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, their road to the Super Bowl just got a lot harder. Most of the teams in the AFC made massive improvements to their rosters. Whether it's a new quarterback, a beefed-up offensive line, or a shiny new receiver, most teams made big changes to their roster.

The Bills did have their own big acquisition, signing star edge rusher Von Miller to a mega-deal. Despite that, though, there are many more issues with their roster. Which position group for the Bills will make the most impact in the 2022 NFL season? Let's take a look.

Key Bills position group to make biggest impact in 2022 NFL season

One of the biggest criticisms of the Bills' offense under Josh Allen has been its one-dimensionality. Allen is one of the best gunslingers in the league, with a cannon arm and the balls to attempt any ridiculous pass. The 2022 AFC Divisional Game was a perfect example of this.

However, the Bills have had to rely on Allen's passing a little too much over the last few years. Buffalo's run game back in 2020 was rather underwhelming, as they ranked in the bottom half of the league in rush attempts AND yards per carry. It seemed like that trend carried over at the start of the 2021 season.

And then, the unthinkable happened: the Bills found success on the ground in 2021. A big part of that was the offense allowing Josh Allen to use his big frame and athleticism on designed QB runs. Devin Singletary also emerged as a great featured back for the team, as he carried the brunt of the running game.

For the Bills to have any hope of continuing their incredible offense in the 2022 season, the running back position needs to do their part and keep the running game afloat. GM Brandon Beane actually addressed the lack of depth at the RB position, signing Duke Johnson and drafting James Cook to help out Singletary. The Bills also almost got a certain great running back from Washington… but that's a topic for another article.

There are many reasons why the Bills' running backs are so integral to their offense. The most logical reason, of course, is that it opens up their prolific aerial attacks. Once a defense realizes that the run game is not a threat, they are more likely to clamp on your wide receivers. That's the most basic idea when it comes to football offense.

The second, and perhaps most important reason, is because of Josh Allen. Allen is probably the most physically intimidating quarterback in the NFL, in terms of size and athleticism. How many times have you seen the Bills QB run over a poor defensive back trying to cover him? He is, by all accounts, a matchup nightmare for offenses.

For as good as Allen is on the ground, though, the Bills want him to limit his carries per contest. Rushing is miles more physically demanding than passing and it opens a quarterback up to injuries. Considering how good Allen is at passing, the team is hoping that they can keep his carries at a minimum and still have an above-average rushing attack.

We'll see how the running back group holds up in the 2022 NFL season. Hopefully, they are able to take the load off of Allen and allow him to focus on what he does best: sling the ball anywhere he pleases.
