Portland Trail Blazers small forward Carmelo Anthony says his son and AAU kids convinced him he still had NBA talent.

Anthony played in just 10 games with the Houston Rockets last season before the franchise exiled him and then traded him to the Chicago Bulls. Chicago waived Anthony, who wasn’t able to find a new home until the Blazers swooped in and signed him.

Melo is averaging 17.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists in six games with the Blazers. The 10-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer is shooting 46.2 percent from the field, 37.0 percent from the 3-point line and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe.

Anthony put up 22.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Blazers last week, winning the Western Conference Player of the Week Award. Portland defeated the Chicago Bulls twice and the Oklahoma City Thunder once.

The Blazers are 8-12 on the season, 11th place in the West. It appears Anthony is going to make it past the Jan. 7 guaranteed date of his contract. It’s impressive how well Melo has played with the Blazers after being out of the NBA for more than a year, and he has helped the franchise bounce back after a tough start to the season.

A lot of pundits ripped the Blazers for signing Anthony. However, after going 3-0 last week, Anthony and the Blazers are the ones who are laughing now.
