Damian Lillard spoke up for everyone who rolls their eyes at offseason workout videos that seem inescapable during the summer. One fan questioned Lillard's dedication and accused him of not working out this summer because there is no video of him in the gym. Lillard clapped back with the perfect response to this anonymous hater on Twitter:

Lillard followed up:

Someone needed to say it, and it's great that one of the best point guards in the league did. Workout videos do not mean anything.

It's hard to believe that this anonymous fan on Twitter actually believes that the only NBA players working hard in the offseason are the ones who post videos of their workouts to social media. Workout videos are almost always carefully curated content intended to build a player's brand. They aren't indicative of who's working hard.

Don't get me wrong, workout videos can be interesting during the quiet summer months. Chris Brickley's videos of open runs with LeBron James and Ben Simmons, among other stars, are always an interesting watch. NBA fans crave content during this time, but there's no reason to put any stock into these videos. These carefully constructed videos don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Workout videos and social media, in general, are opportunities to more closely connect with their fans. Players can keep their fans updated, give them a very tiny peek behind the curtain, and engage their fans directly.

This is an example of Lillard engaging one of his “fans” directly and doing it perfectly.
