The Portland Trail Blazers have been one of the top contenders in the Western Conference in the past few seasons. However, according to the ever controversial LaVar Ball, he doesn't see them winning an NBA championship any time soon.

During an episode of the “Say Less” podcast, Ball expressed his belief that Portland dedicated too much money to extending Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum at the guard spots (transcription via TalkBasket.net):

“Look at the Portland Trail Blazers. You got three hundred million tied in two guards. You ain’t never gonna win nothing,” LaVar told Kazeem Famuyide on Say Less with Kaz. “When tie up all the money in two players it ain’t gonna happen like that.”

Lillard signed a four-year deal worth $196 million at the end of last June. Just one month later, the Blazers rewarded McCollum with a three-year, $100 million deal of his own.

But while Portland solidified one of the best backcourt duos in the NBA in the offseason, it has not resulted in added success on the floor.

The Blazers made a run to the Western Conference Finals last season. This year, however, Portland finds itself needing a strong finish to the season just to even have a shot of reaching the playoff bracket for the NBA restart in Orlando.

Of course, it is hard to blame Lillard and McCollum for the Blazers' struggles.

Lillard has had yet another tremendous season and is undoubtedly one of the best guards in the league. McCollum, too, has had a nice year after a slightly sluggish opening to the campaign. Instead, it has been key injuries to the likes of Jusuf Nurkic and Zach Collins that have made things tough on Portland.

Still, perhaps LaVar Ball has a point, considering other teams — like the Washington Wizards — are struggling after committing the majority of their payrolls to guard players.
