The Portland Trail Blazers have waived veteran big man Pau Gasol, who signed a one-year deal with the team in the summer.

Gasol has been unable to successfully rehab his left foot following surgery. The center could have a coaching role with the Blazers moving forward, though:

Gasol split time last season with the San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks. He appeared in just 30 games and averaged 3.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 44.7 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from beyond the arc and 70.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Gasol has career averages of 17.0 points and 9.2 rebounds with the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Spurs and Bucks. He won two titles with Kobe Bryant on the Lakers. Gasol is a six-time All-Star and was the 2002 Rookie of the Year with the Grizzlies.

Pau will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer one day. The Blazers signed Gasol to back up Hassan Whiteside and Jusuf Nurkic, the latter of whom is scheduled to return from injury around the All-Star break.

However, Gasol's recovery from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot was just not progressing, and it now appears he is going to retire from the NBA. It's been a great career for Pau.
