The Toronto Blue Jays made a move to bolster their bullpen on Monday. Toronto reportedly signed veteran reliever and former All-Star Sergio Romo, per MLB insider Jon Heyman.

The Blue Jays have been rumored to be interested in adding relief help closer towards the trade deadline. But they decided not to wait until July with Sergio Romo available on the open market. However, the team will likely still inquire about trade options as well next month.

The Blue Jays need all the help they can receive. Despite owning a respectable 40-32 record, Toronto places third in the difficult to navigate AL East. They sit just a game and a half back of the Red Sox, but trail the first place Yankees by 12.5 games. Sure, the Jays always have the Wild Card to fall back on. But this is a team with aspirations of winning the division.

Their offense has not played up to expectations yet. But they feature one of the most talented lineups in MLB. Meanwhile, Kevin Gausman leads a fairly strong pitching rotation. So the Blue Jays main area of weakness is the bullpen. Sergio Romo will be a quality option for Toronto down the stretch.

Romo, a 17-year MLB veteran, posted an ERA over 8 for the Mariners this season. But his resume speaks for itself. As aforementioned, he is a former All-Star. Additionally, Romo is a 3-time World Series champion. This signing could end up being one of the more impressive under-the-radar moves in 2022.

The Blue Jays are hopeful Sergio Romo can positively impact the ball club as they chase down the Yankees.
