The Brooklyn Nets might have just won the offseason.
It seemed they did not load up because contenders such as the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat did, but the Nets really didn’t have to. They have freaking Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden on their team so their only focus this off season was to surround those three with the best role players they could snag.
That’s exactly what the Nets did.
Nets draft: A-
Brooklyn started their off season by drafting Cameron Thomas, Kessler Edwards and Marcus Zegarowski. These three were good picks especially Thomas, who has shown a lot of potential in this year’s Summer League. The 27th pick is averaging 20.5 points a game and is one of the top scorers in his draft class in Las Vegas. He can stretch the floor, get his own bucket and works well during crunch time—something the Nets will for sure benefit from.

Acquiring Patty Mills: A
This was the best move for the Nets in the off season. Mills, who averaged 10.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game last season, will help the Nets offense even more. He can be the second or third ball handler next to Irving and Harden is someone the defense cannot leave wide open. Mills will probably come off the bench which is great because he can remove the scoring load from the big three (not that they needed more help) and is someone who won’t complain about his role.

Retaining Blake Griffin: B+
Griffin was acquired via the buyout market last season and has decided to stick with the Nets for this upcoming season. Retaining Griffin was a good move by the Nets because even if he’s slowing down, he has shown he can still contribute when needed. The best game of Griffin for the Nets happened during the playoffs, in Game 1 versus the Bucks where he had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Griffin will have his moments and who knows, now that he’s spent some time under head coach Steve Nash’ system, he can contribute even more. He doesn’t have the hardest job anymore since he’s teaming up with the best trio in the league. All Griffin has to do is be a threat on the front court, score a few buckets, don’t get abused on defense and maybe dunk more to show that he isn't washed, after all.
Signed DeAndre’ Bembry, Bruce Brown Jr., David Duke, Day'Ron Sharpe, Landry Shamet, James Johnson: A-
Again, the Nets don’t have to acquire prolific role players. They just need players who will fit with the big three. Those players have to be at least okay on defense and can contribute some on offense. These five guys can do that for the Nets. Brown has the potential to be their glue guy, Shamet can knock down buckets, Johnson can score easily while the others can provide spot minutes when they need to. This team is already loaded on offense and the best they can do is outhustle their opponents and play some defense.
Bruce Brown is speaking to reporters for the first time since re-signing w/ the Nets. Highlights:
•Felt the Nets qualifying offer was best fit and wants the change to avenge last season. “If we were healthy, I think everyone knows what would’ve happened.”
•Off season focus? 3s.— Malika Andrews (@malika_andrews) August 9, 2021
At the end of the day, Brown could be right even how boastful his comment may sound. The Nets were an inch away from defeating the Bucks and who knows what would have happened if Brooklyn did advance. Durant has arguably claimed his place as the best player in the world while Harden and Irving could be their own superstars in their own team. This team is more than loaded.
Coaching staff additions: B+
What goes underrated in every basketball team or situation is the ability of the coaching staff. The Nets recently signed Kyle Korver to their already loaded coaching staff as a development coach—who can help most when it comes to shooting. Another great mind the Nets signed is David Vanterpool to perhaps help on defense. Steve Nash's staff is loaded with some of the best minds and that will be huge for Brooklyn.
Adding several role players who can buy in and play their roles as well as they can will be key for the Nets as well. Their margin for error is huge and it’s fair to even put them at their own tier in the eastern conference or maybe even in the league. It also helps that the trio will be motivated next season after a horrible injury filled playoff run.
This Nets team can be the best in franchise history. It’s really their title to lose at this point, and that is something consciously on the minds of team executives, coaches and players.
