Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has been under some fire this month for harsh comments he made toward his teammate, running back Duke Johnson, as Johnson is seeking a trade and Mayfield ripped him for it.

But count New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman as someone who is in Mayfield's corner. Not necessarily for what Mayfield said about Johnson, but for his fiery demeanor in general.

“I love Baker. Competitor, feisty,” said Edelman, per Bleacher Report. “I like him. He's not afraid to get up in your grill.”

“Feisty” is definitely a good word to describe Mayfield, who has been known for his flamboyant personality ever since his days at Oklahoma.

The Browns selected the 24-year-old with the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he went on to vindicate Cleveland for the pick by having a spectacular rookie campaign, throwing for 3,725 yards, a rookie record 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 63.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.7.

As a result of Mayfield's performance, the Browns had their best season since 2007, going 7-9 and actually vaulting themselves into playoff contention at one point during the second half of the year.

Cleveland has gone on to have a very busy offseason, loading up with acquisitions like Odell Beckham Jr., Kareem Hunt, Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson.

Now, the Browns have gone from league laughingstocks to genuine contenders in the AFC, at least on paper.

Cleveland has not made the playoffs since the 2002-03 campaign, representing the longest active drought in the NFL.
