Zion Williamson's situation in New Orleans does not seem to get better as time goes on. While the Pelicans invested a ton into what they presumed to be their future star, Williamson does not seem that excited to play for the squad. He has been called out by JJ Redick, his former Pelicans teammate, for being a detached teammate. All of this has caused the Pelicans to possibly consider trading their young player and one team that needs to be in line for him is the Chicago Bulls. Here are two reasons why the Bulls must trade for Zion Williamson this offseason.

Bulls Zion Williamson Trade Breakdown

Insurance for the future

Right now, the Bulls are led by their duo of DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine. Both of them have spent a ton of time in the NBA by now, with DeRozan spending a few years more than his younger counterpart. The Bulls are doing incredibly well with the duo, but with DeRozan being 32 right now, they might be in some trouble for the future. Their team is somewhat younger, with some players yet to really hit their prime, but DeRozan could face a steep falling off in his game if age gets to him. Trading for Zion Williamson would give the Bulls a ton of insurance to remain relevant in the future.

As said above, there are young players on the roster. LaVine is just 26, Coby White is 21, Ball 24, Dosunmu 22, and Patrick Williams 20. However, out of these players, only LaVine has true superstar potential. Obviously, all the other guys are great in their own regard, but they are more specialist/complementary players. Dosunmu has been playing some exceptional defense for the Bulls, just like Lonzo Ball, while Patrick Williams has great potential. If the Bulls want these guys to complement a true championship contender in the future, they should get Williamson.

It does not help the Bulls that one more important piece of their squad is hitting the wrong side of 30. Although just 31 right now, Nikola Vucevic cannot be expected to play on a great level much more. He is, right now, playing on a lower level than he was playing at as part of the Orlando Magic, but that is simply due to the fact that the Bulls are a much more competitive team that already has a ton of scoring. He should, similar to DeRozan, see his production fall off as time goes on, due to age.

All of these problems could be resolved by trading for Zion Williamson. The Bulls would get a second superstar piece to build around, and they would have the LaVine-Williamson duo to athletically and offensively completely destroy opponents. On the other hand, they would have pieces to play defense in Ball and Dosunmu, simply to cover for the shortfalls of their two biggest stars. Of course, DeRozan and Vucevic could remain on the squad and be the veteran leadership of the bench, but the main load of the squad would be on the superstar duo. It sounds like the perfect future for Bulls fans.

Financial flexibility

By some projections, the salary cap of the league should increase further this year, up to $121 million. With the Bulls generally managing their contracts well, what they could theoretically do is send Vucevic in a deal for Williamson, who is only set to make around $10 million next season. Of course, it would not only be Vucevic but other players and picks in the deal. If the right players are sent away, the Bulls could theoretically keep Ball, LaVine, DeRozan, Williamson, and still have enough place for a maximum contract, or close to maximum.

In simpler terms, if this hypothetical trade was to happen with Vucevic and Williamson in the focus, the Bulls could add one more maximum player next to Williamson in the lineup. Of course, they still have to resign LaVine this summer, as his deal is done in the summer, but they can pull their moves before. It would be risky and could cost the Bulls ownership some money in luxury taxes, but if one more elite player is added to the four players above, who can argue with them? It would be one of the best teams assembled in the league's history.

Obviously, all of this is hypothetical, but the Bulls are one of the rare teams in the league that can still retain some sort of financial flexibility. They have $100 million in guaranteed salaries committed for next season and while that is without the presumed maximum deal for star Zach LaVine, with the right trades, they could theoretically fit at least one more superstar on their roster. That superstar could be Williamson who is on a team-friendly deal for next year, or it can be someone and also Williamson if the Bulls play their cards right.

The Bulls might not have the best prospects or the best selections in the league, but as soon as, and if, the Pelicans make Zion Williamson available for trades, most of their leverage will be completely gone. They might choose a package from the Bulls centered around some young players, an expiring deal of Nikola Vucevic, and some first-round picks. That way they keep a ton of their financial flexibility and still get a ton of value out of a disgruntled star, while also sending the player to a different conference. Should he be there, the Bulls should never hesitate and they should go for Zion as soon as possible.
