The NFL has announced the nominees for this year's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award on Thursday. With each team having one player representing them, Cam Newton and Richard Sherman are among the long-list of nominees.

Despite only playing in two games this year, Newton has been a staple in the Carolina Panthers' community since he came into the NFL. Since 2012, Newton's foundation has provided $5.12 million in resources or donations to different programs and organizations.

Most recently, Newton made an appearance at his annual “Thanksgiving Jam”; an event held to provide struggling families with food during the holiday season. This year, the Panthers' quarterback helped feed over 1,300 kids in his annual occasion.

On the other hand, Sherman has been doing charitable work through his foundation called “Blanket Coverage” since 2013. The foundation was created by the veteran cornerback to administer school supplies for students in low-income families.

Besides his foundation, the San Francisco 49ers' cornerback has donated plenty of his own money this season to local schools. Among the donations, he recently donated $27,000 to cover lunch debts at Cabrillo Middle School and the Tacoma Public Schools District.

By being named as nominees, Newton and Sherman will both be given $25,000 towards their charity of choice. In addition, whoever wins the prestigious award will be rewarded $250,000 to place into a charity of their choosing.

This is the second time that Sherman has been nominated for the reputable award. The last time he was nominated came in 2015 when he was with the Seattle Seahawks.
