The Arizona Cardinals have placed a transition tag on running back Kenyan Drake, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Cardinals acquired Drake in a trade with the Miami Dolphins midway through the 2019 campaign. In eight games in Arizona, Drake had the most productive stretch of his NFL career, rushing for 643 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry. He also logged 28 catches for 171 yards.

On the season as a whole, Drake totaled 817 yards and eight scores as a rusher, registering 4.8 yards per attempt. In addition, he hauled in 50 receptions for 345 yards.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Dolphins in the third round (73rd pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He had a very quiet rookie year, finishing with just 179 yards and a couple of touchdowns on the ground. The following year, Drake's role grew significantly, as he recorded 644 yards and three scores while posting 4.8 yards per attempt, adding 32 grabs for 239 yards while reaching the end zone once.

Drake looked to be on the verge of a breakout season, but in 2018, his numbers actually dipped, with the Powder Springs, Ga. native accumulating just 535 yards and four touchdowns as a rusher. He did catch 53 passes for 477 yards and five scores, but his lack of touches as a ball-carrier seemed strange.

Clearly, the Cardinals unlocked a side of Drake that we had never seen before prior to 2019, and they want to try and ensure that he remains in their backfield for 2020.
