Long-time Houston Texan JJ Watt signed with the Arizona Cardinals to join former teammate De'Andre Hopkins this past week, as he kept it a secret from the world until he was ready to let everyone know with his Instagram post.
He dedicated 11 seasons to the Texans where he amassed a total of 101 sacks, 25 forced fumbles, and 531 total tackles. The beast on the defensive line gave it his all for the Texans, and now he's ready to help lift the Cardinals to the playoffs and possibly a Super Bowl appearance, much like Tom Brady did with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past season.
According to Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who spoke in a press conference on Thursday, Watt is a player that others do not want to let down, comparing the perspective of many Buccaneers players when Brady joined the team:
“I would say J.J. Watt has the type of presence that you don’t want to let him down,” Kingsbury said. “You saw and you’ve heard some of those quotes come out of Tampa with Tom, and guys just don’t want to let that type of player with that type of work ethic, and that type of legend — they don’t want to let him down. They don’t want to be that guy that doesn’t hold up their end of the bargain.”
With the Cardinals just missing the playoffs this past season, Watt will ensure that the Cards defense is ready to go and compete this upcoming season. The world saw what Kyler Murray and Hopkins could do on the offensive end. Now, the defense must transform into a force not to be messed with this offseason, as Watt is eyeing his first Super Bowl ring.
