During the flurry of moves occurring around the league prior to the trade deadline on Thursday afternoon, the Boston Celtics took care of a roster addition of their own.

The Celtics have officially announced the signing of free agent veteran big man Greg Monroe to one-year, $5 million deal to fill their last open roster spot.

This had come to be expected as Monroe had agreed to join the Celtics several days ago and was not able to sign a new deal until after the trade deadline passed. He is in line to make his debut with his new team on Thursday night on the road against the Washington Wizards.

The 27-year-old had become available last week after he was waived by the Phoenix Suns, who had acquired him earlier this season in a deal from the Milwaukee Bucks. Monroe has played 25 total games between the Suns and Bucks this season where he averaged of 10.4 points per game, 7.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game along with shooting a career-best 60.1 percent from the field in 21.8 minutes per contest. In his seven years in the NBA, Monroe boasts career averages of 13.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Monroe has proven to be a capable offensive player when given the opportunity to play but has had notable struggles on the defensive end of the floor. His difficulties in that aspect of the game could have impacted his status in two previous stops in his NBA career. However, this next venture with Boston could provide his career a much-needed jolt as he could figure to be a major contributor off the bench.

He will likely figure to play behind Marcus Morris while his presence should provide a strong scorer punch for the Celtics' bench. Boston chose against making any moves at the trade deadline that speak to the confidence that the front office has in their current roster to make a push to compete for an NBA title this season.
