Gordon Hayward made his highly anticipated return to the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night after missing the entire 2017-18 NBA season due to a gruesome lower leg injury. He was emotional in his return, but the night went exactly how he needed. Boston didn't need him to be too aggressive, which allowed Hayward to ease his way back onto the court.
Boston moved to 1-1 on the season after last night's loss against Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors. Looking ahead to their first back-to-back of the season, Hayward will be getting some rest.
According to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic, Hayward will be rested tonight against the New York Knicks as he continues to recover from his left ankle injury.
Through the first two games of the 2018-19 season, Hayward has averaged 12 points and six rebounds. He has shot 40 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the 3-point line.
Hopefully, Hayward's ankle will continue progressing to the point that he does not have to sit out back-to-backs. Boston is playing their cards right tonight, but they need him back to 100 percent.
Gordon Hayward and the Celtics are still viewed as the favorite in the Eastern Conference along with the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers. They will also have to deal with Hayward's hometown Indiana Pacers. That being said, if Hayward can get back to full health and the Celtics keep everyone else healthy, they are going to be extremely difficult to beat in a seven-game series.
Expect to see Hayward back in action Monday night in Boston against the Orlando Magic.
