Veteran point guard Jeff Teague is headed to the Boston Celtics on a one-year deal, per Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe.

Teague will back up All-Star Kemba Walker at the point guard spot.

Jeff Teague played for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks in 2019-20. He averaged 10.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from beyond the arc and 87.3 percent from the free-throw line.

A one-time All-Star, Teague has career averages of 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game with the Hawks, Indiana Pacers and Timberwolves. He's no longer the All-Star player he was with the Hawks, but Teague is one of the better backup point guards in the NBA who can start if Walker's knee acts up again for the Celtics—knock on wood.

Boston lost to the Miami Heat in the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals in six games at Walt Disney World in the NBA bubble. The team has had a tough free agency thus far, as the Celtics lost small forward Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets and Brad Wanamaker to the Golden State Warriors.

Boston also traded big man Enes Kanter to the Portland Trail Blazers, but Danny Ainge recently secured center Tristan Thompson.

The 2020-21 season will start on Dec. 22. The Celtics are unsure if Walker will be ready to go, so the Teague signing makes sense.
