Kyrie Irving is one of the premier players in the NBA. His breathtaking spin moves and killer crossovers help make the Boston Celtics star popular all across the country. But a group of people shares a bond with Irving and an appreciation that extends off the court.

According to Chris Forsberg of ESPN, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe plan to honor Irving in a ceremony on Thursday in Fort Yates, North Dakota. The Native American tribe is honoring Irving due to his family connections to the tribe and his commitment to honoring his roots.

Irving's late mother was a descendant of the tribe and Irving has made numerous statements to honor his roots. He has a tattoo that honors the tribe, and he's made numerous references to the Standing Rock Sioux on his Instagram and on his shoes.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe chairman Mike Faith released this statement:

“We could not be more excited, he has made us all very proud. To know that he has not forgotten his roots and is taking the time before he starts his basketball season to visit the People, his People, shows that Kyrie has great character and pride in his heritage.”

Whenever someone mentions Irving's “roots,” it's usually in connection with New Jersey. But Irving has roots and connections that stretch much farther than the Garden State.

Irving and the Celtics open their season on Oct. 16 at home against the Philadelphia 76ers. The point guard is looking to bounce back from knee issues that ended his 2017-18 season prematurely.
