Boston Celtics hybrid guard Marcus Smart has expressed his desire to stay with the team, but with only days before the Oct. 16 deadline, he's anxiously waiting to hear back from the organization on a possible contract extension.
The 6-foot-4 Oklahoma State product said neither he or his agent, Happy Walters, have heard from the Celtics' brass, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.
Smart has now slimmed down after getting counsel from Chauncey Billups in the offseason, now primed to play a key role for this new-look team. He has averaged 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists while shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc in two preseason games.
The 23-year-old is expected to take the form of Avery Bradley as a three-and-D player for coach Brad Stevens.
The Celtics have committed a massive amount by signing Gordon Hayward and taking on Kyrie Irving's salary — which could prove difficult to hone into his potential price range as one of the best young commodities in the league.
Smart has struggled from the field throughout his career but has worked tirelessly this offseason to fix those woes. He averaged 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals through 79 games last season.
