Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving has been ruled out of Wednesday's matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves with an eye injury. Fortunately, the team does not expect him to be out for an extended period of time.
Kyrie Irving suffered the injury during Boston's loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Monday. According to Chris Grenham of the Celtics Blog, head coach Brad Stevens is optimistic about his long-term status.
This is certainly an encouraging update from Stevens. Irving's eye injury looked particularly gruesome at the time. While Stevens acknowledged that the effects are still rather noticeable, he does not appear to be concerned about Irving's status moving forward.
It is safe to assume that the Celtics managed to dodge a bullet. Irving has been one of the most dominant athletes in the league this season and still holds the distinction for being its most clutch player. He is currently averaging 23.1 points on an efficient 48.8 percent shooting to go with 4.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game.
Unfortunately, Irving's success has been one of the few bright spots on the team this season. Boston has struggled to stay in the win column over the last few weeks. It has become clear that the team has a lot to work on and improve if they hope to defend their Eastern Conference crown.
Irving's absence could allow his teammates to potentially find their rhythm on both ends of the floor before he returns.
