It’s not safe to bet on Shane Larkin’s chances of donning Boston Celtics colors again next season. According to a report by Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, Larkin is preparing to pursue a multi-year deal with another team, as the Celtics have other more pressing concerns than trying to bring back Larkin.

The Celtics have three unrestricted free agents in Shane Larkin, Greg Monroe and Aron Baynes. Larkin likely will procure a multiyear offer from another club as a backup point guard, substantially more than the $1.5 million he earned this season.

Larkin made a successful return to the NBA last year after spending the 2016-17 season in Europe to play for Baskonia in the EuroLeague. Prior to that, Larkin played a season for the Brooklyn Nets in 2015-16 and for the New York Knicks in 2014-15.

According to Washburn’s report, the Celtics are eyeing to bring back Marcus Smart, who is also set to become a restricted free agent. Smart is expected to receive significant offers from other teams thanks to his impressive play for the Celtics, meaning Boston will have to reserve some money to match those offers and keep Smart.

As for Larkin, he’s better off with another team than in Boston, where he’s only going to operate as a third-string point guard behind Kyrie Irving and Terry Rozier.

Shane Larkin, son of baseball Hall of Famer, Barry, signed a one-year deal with Boston last year worth $1.5 million. In 54 games played for the Celtics, Larkin averaged 4.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in only 14.4 minutes.
