Los Angeles Chargers fans couldn't have asked or expected more from backup Austin Ekeler while star running back Melvin Gordon has been holding out for new contract.
While being used in the ground game alongside Justin Jackson, Ekeler has really been an explosive passing threat out of the backfield for quarterback Philip Rivers.
Through three games, Ekeler has totaled 19 catches for 208 yards, which is closer to wide receiver numbers than running back stats. That kind of production has not gotten to Ekeler's head as he still remains humble and willing to be used in any format the team needs him in.
His effectiveness on the offensive side of the ball has been substantial enough that even with Gordon's return looming next week, it doesn't seem that the Chargers will slash his offensive snaps dramatically. It will take sometime to have Gordon fully rolling with the offense, having already missed three games where Los Angeles went 1-2.
It seems like the biggest thing for Gordon will be his ability to stay healthy through the next 13 games, as sustaining an injury after not being able to secure his new contract would be his worst possible scenario.
If the Los Angeles offense can improve and become more consistent throughout all four quarters of the game, watch out. This is the same team that was able to pull out a thrilling divisional win against the Kansas City Chiefs, winning 29-28 at Arrowhead Stadium.
Ekeler will get one last opportunity as the full-time starter in Miami this Sunday as head coach Anthony Lynn stated that it is unlikely that Gordon suits up for this weeks matchup.
