In the days ahead of Week 16 action against the Baltimore Ravens, there have been some questions concerning Los Angeles Chargers star running back Melvin Gordon's status.
Head coach Anthony Lynn had stated earlier in the week that the hope was that Gordon would be able to take the field on Saturday night. This was all but confirmed on Thursday as he wasn't on the final injury report heading into the game, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
Article Continues BelowThe Chargers’ final injury report before the game sent the same message. Gordon was not given an injury designation, which leaves him set to return after missing the last three games.
Gordon has been on the mend the last couple of weeks due to an MCL injury that he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals, which he has progressively made progress toward his return to the field. This has ramped up over the last several days that saw him nearly be able to play in last Thursday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. In fact, Lynn has voiced that Gordon would have played had the game been on Sunday rather than being so early in the week.
Nonetheless, it looks like Gordon is in the clear to be back on the field to play against the Ravens. This is a significant boost to the offense as he's one of the key pieces to the puzzle as their primary workhorse option in the backfield. Gordon has tallied up 802 rushing yards and is fifth with nine rushing touchdowns along with 44 receptions for 453 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
Gordon should play a vital role against the Ravens, who possess one of the league's best defenses ranking first overall, third against the pass, and third against the run. All of this set up an even more intriguing matchup between two teams jocking for playoff positioning.
