Following a disappointing end to the 2017 NFL season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been added to the AFC Pro Bowl roster in place of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

Smith is coming off his most productive season after posting career highs across the board with 4,042 passing yards with 26 touchdowns to just five interceptions while holding a league-best 104.7 passer rating. He also finished the year third with a 67.5 percent completion rate, eighth in passing yards, and ninth in touchdown passes.

It will mark the third Pro Bowl selection and second straight overall with each coming as a member of the Chiefs. Since being acquired by Kansas City back in February 2013, Smith has made the franchise a constant in the NFL playoffs with appearances in four out of the first five seasons including the last three years. This also includes winning the AFC West division in each of the last two campaigns, which is the first back-to-back division titles in team history.

Despite all of that, Smith's future with the Chiefs beyond the 2017 season has been heavily discussed for the last several months. The front office's decision to move up to the 10th overall pick in last year's draft to take quarterback Patrick Mahomes II sparked up the notion that his time in Kansas City is nearing an end.

Smith is set to enter the final year of his deal that could reach $20.6 million due to a $2 million roster bonus that will be put into effect if he’s still on the roster at the start of training camp. If the Chiefs do decide to part ways with him before that, his contract will only be a $3.6 million hit against the salary cap next season.

All of this will more than likely begin to take shape once the 2017 season is wrapped up. There will be a handful of teams looking to possibly acquire Smith. He could receive interest from franchises such as the New York Jets, Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and Cleveland Browns.
