Patrick Mahomes isn't exactly lacking for top-tier receiver targets. But as the Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 4 losers of two straight games, they could certainly use the jolt of energy provided by a notable midseason addition.

Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon passed his physical and signed his contract on Tuesday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, making his previously reported addition to the Chiefs official.

News of Gordon's imminent signing with Kansas City first made the rounds on Monday. Suspended indefinitely by the NFL in December 2019 for violations of the league's policy on substance abuse and performance-enhancing drugs, Gordon's application for reinstatement was approved by commissioner Roger Goodell shortly before he agreed to join the Chiefs.

Gordon missed all of last season due to suspension, and failed to reach his early-career, All-Pro heights at each of his stops in the league since sitting out the 2014 and 2015 campaigns due to substance abuse issues. At 30 years old, he's no longer in his athletic prime, either.

But Gordon's imposing size and physicality remain with age, no doubt attributes that made him attractive to Kansas City. The Chiefs never replaced the departed Sammy Watkins over the offseason, leaving Mecole Hardman and a group of journeymen to pick up his slack at wide receiver behind superstar Tyreek Hill.

Anyone expecting Gordon to re-establish himself as a down-to-down impact player will surely be disappointed. There isn't a quarterback better equipped to help revitalize Gordon's career than Mahomes, though, especially with defenses so focused on limiting Hill and future Hall-of-Fame tight end Travis Kelce.

Gordon's status for Kansas City's Week 4 tilt with the Philadelphia Eagles is unknown, though ESPN previously reported that Andy Reid and company planned to promote him from the practice squad to the active roster “shortly after” his signing became official.
