The Kansas City Chiefs have signed first-rounders Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis to their rookie deals, per Pro Football Talk.

The signings come just a week after each of the two were selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. McDuffie was picked with the 21st pick, while Karlaftis went just nine picks later at No. 30. The deals don't come as any kind of surprise, as first-round picks always sign deals with their teams shortly after the draft.

With that being said, the duo are some of the first ones to sign their deals this year. The Packers started things off by signing their first-round duo of Devonte Wyatt and Quay Walker. Karlaftis and McDuffie's deals came just shortly after.

The two figure to play a crucial role in turning the Chiefs' defense around. While Tyreek Hill departed the team this offseason, they've made it clear their intentions to get better on defense. They spent five of their first six draft selections on defensive players.

That one exception was wide receiver Skyy Moore, who will play a role in trying to replace Hill. Most importantly, the team still has Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce on offense. Chris Jones still leads the way on defense, despite the loss of Tyrann Mathieu.

The Chiefs still figure to be Super Bowl contenders and AFC favorites in 2022, although it'll be much tougher than the past few years. Not only did they lose a few key members, but the AFC around them has only gotten better. More specifically, every team in the AFC West has closed the gap on them with successful offseasons. Karlaftis and McDuffie figure to have an impact on the direction the 2022 Chiefs go.
