The Kansas City Chiefs will be returning one of the stalwarts from their 2019 Super Bowl champion defensive units in cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who Rob Demovsky of ESPN reported is returning to the team on a one-year deal that could pay him up to $4.5 million.

Breeland played in all 16 regular-season games last season for Kansas City, the first time that he has played the entire regular season since his rookie year with Washington in 2014. His first year with the franchise saw him accumulate 48 tackles, eight passes defended, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

But Breeland's most integral success was the interception of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo during Super Bowl LIV.

While Kansas City's offense gets a vast majority of the national attention due to the explosive abilities of Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs' defense was a stout unit in 2019. The move to bring back Breeland indicates that the team sees a considerable window for sustained success, and that bringing back key pieces could help them maximize their opportunity for as many wins as the schedule will allow heading into 2020.

Breeland's role in his second season with Kansas City may be increased due to the departure in free agency of Kendall Fuller. How Rashad Fenton and Charvarius Ward also fit into the equation remains to be seen in the months ahead, but Tyrann Mathieu—and now Breeland—will be back to anchor the secondary in the team's quest for a Super Bowl repeat.
