Kansas City Chiefs star safety Tyrann Mathieu is on the reserve/COVID-19 list after testing positive for the coronavirus. Mathieu is vaccinated, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher.

Given Mathieu is vaccinated and there's still a good amount of time before the Chiefs' Week 1 game, the hope is he should be ready to go. Kansas City opens the season at home on Sept. 12 against the Cleveland Browns.

For Mathieu to be cleared to play, he must test negative twice within a 24-hour period and also be asymptomatic.

While the Chiefs have a loaded roster, they aren't exactly deep at the safety position. Kansas City only has three other safeties on the 53-man roster besides Mathieu. So, hopefully the Honey Badger will indeed be ready to go for that Week 1 game, which is a rematch of the Divisional Round showdown from last season.

With Patrick Mahomes leading the way, the Chiefs are once again expected to be a top Super Bowl contender. While they were embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl, all the talent on offense plus a revamped offensive line should have them dominating again. As for Mathieu and the defense, they just need to be competent to have a lot of success.
