It looks like tragedy was narrowly avoided in Copenhagen after Denmark's Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during a Euro 2020 match against Finland.

According to Denmark's team doctor Morten Boesen, Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest and “was gone” before getting resuscitated by a defibrillator. Boesen isn't sure just how close Eriksen was to actually dying.

Truly scary stuff:

Eriksen is now in stable condition at the hospital and has communicated with teammates and coaches:

Denmark's 1-0 loss to Finland was delayed for over 90 minutes after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch. Eriksen's Danish teammates formed a wall around him as medical personnel tended to him. The players were obviously affected by what happened, and it had to be extremely difficult to keep playing after the delay.

Eriksen got an outpouring of support from all over as people prayed for his recovery. Several teammates and former teammates gave him a shoutout either on social media or during their own games. Former Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol even got in on the action, sending his support Eriksen's way.

The fact that Christian Eriksen seems to be doing much better after this near-death experience is obviously a huge positive. Eriksen is just 29 years old and was in good health before this incident, so this seems to have come out of nowhere. More details will surely emerge as doctors learn more about what exactly happened and what may have caused the cardiac arrest.
