The Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA world on Wednesday night. It's been reported that the Mavs are trading with the Houston Rockets for the talented power forward, Christian Wood. This is a blockbuster move that appeared to come out of nowhere.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, the Mavs are finalizing the deal with the Rockets to acquire Wood. In exchange, the Mavs send Houston Boban Marjanovic, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss and the number 26 pick in the NBA Draft.

There had been rumors for much of the season that Houston might look to move Wood. It's certainly an interesting move for Houston. They finished last season with the worst record in the NBA at 20-62. Wood was inarguably one of the team's best players. He averaged 17.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and shot just over 50 percent from the field.

Clearly, the Rockets are looking at a complete rebuild and apparently did not see Wood as part of that process.

The Mavs, on the other hand, just got significantly better in one fell swoop of a trade. All of the players Dallas included in the trade are rotational guys at best. Although the number 26 pick is nothing you can scoff at, it's still not likely to land a future superstar.

Meanwhile, Mavs star Luka Doncic should be smiling right now. This is probably the most athletically gifted big man he has played with. That includes Kristaps Porzingis. It should be a lot of fun watching Doncic and Wood playing pick and roll together for the foreseeable future.
