Doc Rivers was already a known man in Los Angeles circles, but he because a town hero after the constant stories of his involvement in the signing of Kawhi Leonard became public knowledge. The LA Clippers coach admits he's been the beneficiary of the kindness of thankful fans and businesses.

“I got a couple of free meals out of it,” Rivers joked recently, according to Mark Medina of USA TODAY Sports. “You also know if you don’t win it, you have (to) pay for the rest of them.”

The Clippers wagon is running on full championship fuel, but Rivers knows it will take more than a savvy driver, a potent engine, and some fully-pumped tires to make their way up Larry O'Brien Road.

“I’m not going to be out in the front saying we’re going to win it. But I’m fine if that’s what everybody thinks,” Rivers said. “Why run from expectations? I’ve never understood that.”

Fresh off an eight-seed and a first-round elimination at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, the new-look Clippers still have a lot to prove and little to go off of to make an immediate claim for the NBA title, though having two of the best two-way superstars does give them a strong chance to come away with it by season's end.

If fully healthy, this Clippers team can dole out some damage in the playoffs, but if they fall well shy of that expectation, Rivers might just have to take out his wallet and start paying for these meals in the near future.
