Shortly after extending a qualifying offer to young center Ivica Zubac, the Los Angeles Clippers are also doing the same thing on their sharpshooting guard Rodney McGruder.

McGruder, 27, only played 18 games for the Clippers last season, but he showed flashes of becoming a reliable 3-point shooter. During his brief time with the team, the three-year vet averaged 5.1 points on 49 percent shooting, including a 42 percent clip from beyond the arc. So making McGruder a restricted free agent is a good move for LA.

Now, it is unclear how the qualifying offers to Zubac and McGruder will help the Clippers in their plans of landing a top free agent next week, but both guys have shown the potential of becoming good rotation players, and given the fact that the Clips are going big-name hunting on Sunday, they will need to make sure that they surround whoever star they get with quality reserves for next season.

It is expected that McGruder will get a decent amount of interest from other teams, especially with how well he shot the ball during his brief stint with the Clippers. However, there’s a big possibility that he’ll stay in LA unless there are some unexpected changes with the team’s plans for next season.

Pretty much like any team with tons of cap space, the Clippers are laser-focused on the big-name free agents that are set to hit the market this weekend. But that will not stop them from adding guys that can contribute to their goal of winning a championship in the near future.
