Steve Ballmer, the owner of the LA Clippers, believes that his team is now worth more than $3 billion.

In an interview with Claire Atkins of NBC News, and as per reported by Darren Rovell of ESPN, Ballmer estimated that the Clippers would be worth at least $3 billion if he were to sell it now.

To recall, Ballmer bought the team in May 2014 after the spate of racial controversies involving Donald Sterling, the team's longtime owner. Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft, had one of the largest offers when the biddings opened. Ballmer said then, per NBA.com:

“I love basketball. And I intend to do everything in my power to ensure that the Clippers continue to win – and win big – in Los Angeles,” Ballmer said. “LA is one of the world's great cities – a city that embraces inclusiveness, in exactly the same way that the NBA and I embrace inclusiveness.”

It's difficult to tell how Ballmer estimated the Clippers' worth. The team has achieved relative success even before he stepped in as the new owner.

But after several playoff disappointments, the Clippers — under his tenure — experienced the falling out of the team's core comprised of Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, and Blake Griffin. Not only did they form a critical part of the team's success, but it was this trio that fans came to watch live.
