When the Coastal Carolina football team burst onto the scene during the wacky, 2020 COVID season, it was on the back of a disruptive defense and quarterback Grayson McCall, then a redshirt freshman who was named Sun Belt Player of the Year at season's end. McCall has since gone on to win the very same award two more times, becoming the only player to win the Sun Belt Player of the Year three times. Following his junior season, McCall did flirt with the idea of bolting Conway, South Carolina for a greater challenge in the SEC, but at the last minute he decided NOT to go to Auburn.
The talent cupboard for Coastal Carolina isn't quite as full as it was over the past few years, and McCall's senior season has been a bit of a disappointment. But as a sports fan, no disappointment is greater than seeing promising young player get injured, and that's exactly what happened to McCall this past Saturday in the Chanticleers game against Arkansas State. McCall played his best game of the season to date, completing 24 of 28 passes for 244 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but was knocked out of the game in the 4th quarter and carted off the field.
Coastal Carolina football coach Tim Beck shared with reporters that Grayson McCall was not in concussion protocol, but was doubtful for the Chanticleers next game, versus Sun Belt opponent Marshall (h/t Luke Creasy of the Herald-Dispatch, Twitter). The door was left cracked open for McCall to play, but after an injury that looked so troubling, I'd bet McCall sits the next one out.
