Coco Gauff takes on Julia Avdeeva at the French Open. Our French Open odds series has our Gauff Avdeeva prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Gauff Avdeeva.

The 2024 French Open is unpredictable on the men's side. On the women's side, there is a clear power structure at the top. Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, the top two players in the world on the WTA Tour, are the leading contenders for the Roland Garros championship. Right behind them are Elena Rybakina and Gauff, the U.S. Open champion and a 2022 Roland Garros finalist who lost to Swiatek in the title match in Paris. Gauff's speed, court coverage, defensive acumen, situational awareness, and competitive toughness have catapulted her to tennis stardom at a young age. She is only 20 and yet has played in multiple major finals and is an experienced, battle-tested tennis player. One can't really say her youth is a disadvantage, because she has handled the spotlight so well on so many occasions. One can't really say the physicality of the tour has worn her down, because she continues to put herself at the center of the conversation. She reached this year's Australian Open semifinals before losing to Sabalenka. Gauff was widely — and accurately — regarded as the second-best player at that tournament in January. She had the misfortune of being in the same half of the draw as Sabalenka; hence, she played her in the semis, not the final. Nonetheless, Gauff is a clear-cut top-four player and someone who is now regularly expected to make quarterfinal and semifinal runs at important tournaments. She is not expected to face a massive challenge in her first-round French Open match.

Why Coco Gauff Could Cover The Spread

The spread of 7.5 games for this match is properly weighted. In a best-of-three-set match, and more precisely, a match which is expected to last just two sets, Gauff would need to win the two sets by an average of four games per set in order to cover the spread. So, if Gauff wins each set 6-2, she will cover. If she wins 6-3, 6-1, she will cover. If she wins 6-4, 6-0, she will cover. Given the enormous gulf in overall quality between these two players, it seems pretty reasonable to think Gauff can win a 6-2, 6-2 match and thereby cover the spread.

Why Julia Avdeeva Could Cover The Spread

If the start of a major tournament offers a brief “settling in” period and a general adjustment to the environment and playing conditions, an elite player might lose just one or two games more than in a second-round match or a third-round match when the conditions aren't as tricky or new. Gauff will win the match, but if she is even a slight bit rusty or uncertain at the start of the match, Avdeeva could win three games in the first set. Why do we focus on three games in the first set? Because Gauff needs a 6-2, 6-2 win to cover the spread. If Avdeeva can win three games in the first set, that creates a situation where she can lose the second set 6-2 and still cover.

If the final score is 6-3, 6-2 for Gauff, Avdeeva covers the 7.5-game spread.

Final Coco Gauff-Julia Avdeeva Prediction & Pick

You should stay away from this match. The spread will probably be seven or eight games. It's probably going to be a cliffhanger. Bet on something which seems safer and less volatile.
