Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri has had a long and impressive career to this point. At 46 years old, there's a lot of speculation on how long he'll continue to play. Colts general manager Chris Ballard spoke about Vinatieri and knows the 22-year veteran still has plenty left in the tank.
Does Chris Ballard still think Adam Vinatieri can be an effective kicker in this league?
“Absolutely, I do.”
Will it be with #Colts?
“We’ll see.”
Adds that Vinny is among the most impressive leaders in the locker room.— George Bremer (@gmbremer) January 14, 2019
Vinatieri is a four-time Super Bowl champion, winning three titles with the New England Patriots and one with the Colts back in 2007 (his first season with Indianapolis). Although Vinatieri is the oldest active player in the NFL, it's obvious he still can play at a high level. The Colts bounced back this season in a big way with quarterback Andrew Luck back and healthy. New head coach Frank Reich was fantastic in his first season with the Colts, and Vinatieri's presence does not go unnoticed either.
The Colts would have a different kicker for the first time in over a decade if Vinatieri decided to retire or the team went in a different direction at the position. Vinatieri is still completing field goal attempts at a great 85 percent and only missed four of the 27 field goal attempts this season.
Indianapolis could use Vinatieri's locker room presence. However, Ballard is practical in his approach to the situation. Ballard seemingly would love to have the veteran kicker back, but he knows Vinatieri has options to weigh upon regarding his future. Indy is a great team going forward, and Vinatieri provides great security on special teams.
