Gino Marchetti, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, passed away Monday at the age of 93. It would be hard to overstate Marchetti's contributions to the game. The Hall of Fame posted an article on its site to reflect on his life and career. In part it reads, “Marchetti was selected All-NFL nine straight years, voted to 11 Pro Bowls and enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972.”
A defensive end, Marchetti won back to back championships with the Baltimore Colts in 1958 and 1959.
“Gino Marchetti dominated the football field during his career in the 1950s and ‘60s as a leader of the great Baltimore Colts teams of that era. His ferocious style of play defined the character of a man who possessed a strong desire to succeed, passion, and determination that made him a great teammate,” Hall of Fame President & CEO David Baker said in a statement.
“Those same traits made him a highly successful business leader after his playing days. The legacy of Gino Marchetti’s well-lived life will forever be preserved in Canton, Ohio to serve as inspiration to future generations of fans.”
The Hall of Fame also put together a video tribute which it posted on Twitter.

After playing one season with the Dallas Texans, Marchetti would go on to play the next 13 with the Colts. Marchetti enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school, and fought in World War II. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
