The Indianapolis Colts needed some help on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, so they went out and landed former Kansas City Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston.

Staying healthy has been a problem for Houston in recent years, but when he is right, he has the ability to be one of the most dominant defensive players in the league, and he is already showing big things for the Colts this summer.

“He’s buying in to the effort and the mentality (to) which our standards are set,” defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus said, according to George Bremer of The Herald Bulletin. “So that’s No. 1. And then the power, those are the things that he brings to the table. He could level rush and come back inside and use that extreme power and lean that he has. He’s done a nice job with that — the one-on-one periods as well as team periods. So he brings a lot of power, too.”

Houston is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 12 games and registered 37 tackles, nine sacks, an interception, five forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

Second-year linebacker Darius Leonard, who is a terrific defensive player in his own right, has already learned a lot from Houston.

“He’s a monster,” Leonard said. “Just the way he uses his hands, the way he’s always winning his block or playing two gaps, just his knowledge of the game. He knows what’s coming, and he can tell me exactly what’s coming.”

Houston came up with the Chiefs in 2011, and in 2014, he came within one sack of breaking Michael Strahan's single-season record, finishing with 22 sacks on the year.

He has made four Pro Bowls while earning one First-Team All-Pro selection thus far in his career.
