Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack is questionable to return to their opening game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars due to an ankle injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The injury happened during the second quarter of the game just as he was trying to catch a pass from Colts quarterback Philip Rivers. He did not appear to make contact with other players when he went down. Mack had to be helped off the field and was later carted off.  Before the injury, Mack had been playing well for head coach Frank Reich, having four carries for 26 yards and three receptions for 30 yards for Indianapolis.

The loss of Mack means that the Colts will rely more on rookie running back Jonathan Taylor, who was selected by Indianapolis with the 41st overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Fellow running back Nyheim Hines, who started along with Mack, already has five carries for 22 yards and a touchdown by halftime against Jacksonville.

The 24-year-old, who was drafted by the Colts in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, is currently in his fourth season. In 14 games for Indianapolis last season, his third in the league, Mack rushed for 1,063 yards and scored eight touchdowns while adding 14 receptions and 82 receiving yards. However, the season also wasn’t completely injury-free for the young running back, who missed games for the Colts due to a fractured hand. Indianapolis enters the 2020 season hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2019 season, which began with the sudden retirement of quarterback Andrew Luck, and was plagued by injuries to several players, resulting in a 7-9 record and missing the playoffs.
