The Jacksonville Jaguars did not want to retain the services of wide receiver Allen Hurns, but the Dallas Cowboys were happy to give him a new home. However, since they already had a No. 88 on the roster (that Dez Bryant guy), he had to choose a new number.

He decided to go with No. 17. His reason why is pretty admirable—he wanted to honor the victims of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Hurns shared the news during a recent radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ show.

“The Douglas shooting that was in Florida, 17 people lost their lives. So I chose that number.”

Hurns was born in Miami, went to high school at Miami Carol City, and played his college ball for the Miami Hurricanes. The first four years of his pro career were with the Jacksonville Jaguars. So yeah, he has a pretty good connection to the area which is still mourning the tragic event on February 14th.

But why not go after his old number? Hurns' answer on the matter was pretty simple.

“That 88, there wasn't a doubt, I wasn't trying to get that or anything like that. That's all Dez [Bryant].”

However, with the Cowboys singing Hurns and former Buffalo Bills receiver Deonte Thompson, many are speculating that Bryant’s time in Dallas could be coming to an end. Rumors are floating around the internet that the Cowboys could cut him following the draft.

If they take a receiver with their first-round pick—well, then we’ll know.
