The Dallas Cowboys passing game has been questioned for basically the entire offseason. Aside from the loss of their top two receivers from last year — Dez Bryant and Jason Witten — Dak Prescott has also not looked particularly impressive. Witten’s loss, in particular, could potentially affect Prescott, who will have to find a new receiver he trusts in important situations.

In an interview on NFL Network (per Clarence E. Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram), Kurt Warner asked the Cowboys quarterback whether he has any receiver that he’d trust on a clutch third-down situation, and Dak says he does:

Surprisingly, Prescott listed receiver Cole Beasley as the person he would trust to target in those situations right now based on their past success.

While Beasley had a down year in 2017 — 36 catches for 314 yards and four touchdowns — he did have a career year with 75 catches for 833 yards and five touchdowns during Prescott’s rookie year in 2016.

Although, Cowboys legend Michael Irvin raised the interesting point that Beasley’s success then came while playing behind Bryant and Witten. As good as Beasley was in a supporting role, he remains unproven as a more prominent offensive weapon who will get a lot more attention from opposing defenses.

Basically, that is the main concern about the Cowboys coming into this season. They don’t have proven playmakers following the departures of Bryant and Witten, and it remains to be seen if the likes of Beasley are good enough to get the job done.

Beasley and the other Cowboys receivers have pushed back against their critics who have underestimated their ability this offseason. But when the time comes, they’ll have to back up their talk and show they’re worthy of being as trusted as Witten in the big spots.
