The Dallas Cowboys have been notably working on getting long-term deals done with three of their star offensive players. Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Amari Cooper have all been wanting new deals. Surprisingly, Jaylon Smith is the first player that Dallas ended up giving a long-term deal to.

According to a report from Mike Garafolo via Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys have officially agreed to a long-term contract extension with their rising star linebacker.

Getting Smith locked up is something that the Cowboys wanted to get done this offseason. After coming into the NFL with a gruesome knee injury and questions about his long-term future, Smith has become the heart and soul of the defense. He is not only a good linebacker, he is one of the NFL's top rising defensive players.

Last season in all 16 games with the Cowboys, Smith ended up recording 121 total tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and four defended passes. Those numbers show just how capable Smith is of stuffing the stat sheet each and every week.

At just 24 years old, Smith is going to be a cornerstone for the Cowboys moving forward. They feel like they are a piece or two away from winning a Super Bowl. If they can get their offensive talent back and locked up to new deals, they are going to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Expect to hear more news come out surrounding the Cowboys in the coming days. They have a lot more work to do, but this is an excellent start.
