Former Dallas Cowboys star and Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin wants his former team to show quarterback Dak Prescott the money.

Irvin said Prescott has been “perfect” in terms of his character both on and off the field, adding the team should reward the former fourth-round pick for his contributions to the franchise (via the Dallas Morning News):

“Dak has been not great, but perfect. Not necessarily in wins and losses, of course. But I’m talking about just the person that he’s been. The kind of investment you want to make, the kind of guy you say ‘yeah, we hit it with this guy. We got him in the fourth round.’ You stole four years, so whatever he gets he deserves because you still owe him back pay.”

The Cowboys assigned the exclusive franchise tag to Prescott in March, with the intention of signing him to a long-term deal at some point this offseason.

Negotiations have gone back and forth between the two sides. Pro Football talk analyst and former quarterback Chris Simms reported the Cowboys offered Prescott a five-year deal worth $175 million but added Prescott wants a four-year pact.

Although the Cowboys missed the playoffs in 2019 after collapsing down the stretch, Prescott had the finest season of his career. Prescott completed over 65 percent of his passes, throwing for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. Dak also ranked fourth in total QBR, according to ESPN.

Dallas might show more urgency in trying to reach an extension in the coming months. It is incredibly rare for a quarterback to play on the franchise tag, and Prescott has more than proven his worth under center.
